Waukee uses Voyager to Ease Compliance with Unfunded NPDES MS4

Jenny Corkrean, Waukee's Stormwater Coordinator, purchased two GIS Group Voyagers for this city of 9,000 to help with compliance of the NPDES (National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System) MS4 (Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System) regulations.

Equipped with the Voyager and all the on-screen forms necessary to collect the Storm Sewer System Map and Watershed Assessment data, two summer interns went into the field to photograph assets and inventory the system. Corkrean had estimated that it would take until December to compile the data; it was completed by the end of July. "Remarkable really," Corkrean said of the speed with which the inventory was accomplished.

She attributes this achievement to the reliability of the Voyager equipment and the simplicity of the on-screen data forms. The interns also took more than 50 pictures a day of the storm system, which are automatically uploaded and linked to data fields in the Voyager through a wireless connection.

To further conserve staff resources with the Voyager, some municipalities use one inspector for all city inspection needs, because any number of Voyager inspection forms are integrated with the GIS data. These forms can also be customized to fit the needs of the municipality.

The Voyager application also contains a process to manage and synchronize any new field survey data with existing See City facility data contained on your main data server or a workstation. And a specially developed toolbar allows the field collector to easily draft new and existing plant and assets.
